What is Bowen Therapy and what can I expect?Bowen was developed by the late Tom Bowen (1916-1982) and is safe for everyone, from newborns to the old-aged, it is safe for both acute and chronic conditions and relieves the body's reactive patterns to injury, pain, and misalignment. Bowen is a gentle, non-invasive therapy that acts upon the soft connective tissue (fascia) and the nervous system of the body, for correction of mechanical and neural dysfunctions. Light moves across muscles, tendons, and ligaments at specific points aim to restore function to the body and facilitate the body's innate ability to self-regulate and heal. Each session involves a series of Bowen moves which are made on precise points on the body. These first moves encourage the body to relax to help aid in recovery. Some rest periods my be interspersed throughout the treatment to allow the body to respond and release. The treatment is generally relaxing and pleasant, some may feel sensations, while others do not, everyone's experience is different as we are all unique. Lifestyle and medical history are taken into account as well as current symptoms. This helps the Practitioner formulate a treatment plan, which may change according to responses. photos and video's may be required to document any changes that occur and are only taken with the consent of the individual.
-
Is Bowen safe?Bowen Therapy is completely safe and is suitable for the elderly, disabiled, children, babies and even pets.
-
How am I diagnosed? Please be aware that I do not diagnose or provide medical advice. In fact, I may refer you back to your family Doctor if I have concerns. Many Family Physicians regcognize the benefits of complementary therapies and are willing to work with Bowen Practitioners.
-
What do I wear?Bowen is most effective if it is performed directly on the skin but it can be done through light clothing. Bowen moves are difficult to apply through thick material such as sweaters, jeans or thick skirts. A blanket or warm towels can help keep you warm.
-
How long does a session last?Your first treatment, which includes a consultation, will be approximately 1 hour (depending on your circumstances). A regular appointment will last for approximately 45-60 minutes. Babies and toddler are 1/2 hour and Mom and Dad are always in the room.
-
How many sessions do I need?It depends on the length of time the problems has been presenting. Usually if the problem is acute and not present for long, 1 to 3 sessions will be fine. If the condition is chronic more sessions may be needed. Each person is different and I always check in with my client to see how you are feeling.
-
What should I expect from my session? The effects of Bowen may be felt during or immediatley after the session, in some cases it may take a few days as the effects continue up to 14 days after treatment. In most cases the effects are usually more acute in the first 7 days. Some individuals may feel their symptoms worsen but will find they subside and healing begins. It is important to follow any self care protocols provided during your treatment plan. When in doubt you can reach out with your questions or concerns.
-
What can I do to improve the treatment outcome? You will be given an after care sheet after your session. Depending on your situation you may be given specific exercises to do as well. It is always important to walk at least 15-30 minutes a day (if you are able to), drink 6-8 glasses of water, and to avoid any other therapy for at least 7 days before and after a Bowen Session.

Do you treat animals as well?Absolutely! In fact many animals suffer from the same issues as their owners and find it soothing and beneficial to be involved in the treatment. I am a certified Animal Bowen Practitioner and more information can be found at my site www.pawsitive-healing.com.
-
Where will my treatment take place?I am a mobile service and provide home visits, which enable you to be in the comfort of your own home and the opportunity to relax after your treatment. I do ask that you provide a large enough space for me to set up my table and have enough room to move around.

What happens after the 1 to 3 sessions have been completed? If your issues have improved we can connect in several weeks time to see if any further follow up is required. Bowen can be used as a preventative healing modality and most people would benefit from a helath care regime. Bowen can be very beneficial in managing conditions such as arthritis, MS, chronic fatigue or stroke. A maintenance plan with appointments set monthly, six week intervals or quarterly can be arranged to prevent further problems, maintain posture and release stress and tension.
Please contact me if you have any further questions or concerns. I am always happy to talk about Bowen!
